Shubman Gill Dropped as India Announces Squad for 2026 T20 World Cup; Axar Patel Named Vice-Captain
MUMBAI – To understand what has rocked the cricketing community, the BCCI on Saturday created a selection bombshell by excluding Shubman Gill, a star batter and a former vice-captain, from India’s 15-member team to play in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The news, delivered at the BCCI headquarters by the chief selector Ajit Agarkar and the captain Suryakumar Yadav, was an indication of a brutal attitude towards defending the title of the champions. The next in the leadership pecking order to replace Gill is the all-rounder Axar Patel, who has been officially named as vice-captain in the prestigious event that India is hosting in partnership with Sri Lanka.
The Omission of the “Prince”
Nothing in the afternoon more likely won the attention of the talkers than the exclusion of Shubman Gill. Until recently, Gill was considered the mainstay of the post-Rohit-Kohli India, as well as being the nominal vice-captain in the short format. But an extended lean streak – 15 T20I innings without a half-century – changed the mind of the selectors.
“Shubman is a quality player, and it’s unfortunate to miss out, but you have to look at combinations,” said chief selector Ajit Agarkar during the press conference. “He has been a bit short of runs lately, and we felt we needed a wicketkeeper-batter who could provide more flexibility and explosive power at the top of the order.”
One of the greatest cricketers of all time, Sunil Gavaskar, was surprised by the move and expressed his opinion, saying, “He is a class act, but perhaps the pressure of the ‘bang-bang’ style of T20s affected his natural game.”
The Return of the Prodigal Sons
Although the headline was taken by Gill stepping down, the headline was accompanied by two giant “comeback” stories in the squad. Ishan Kishan makes a comeback to the national team two years after a long absence, and this time around, he is rewarded by his blistering form in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he led Jharkhand win their maiden title. Kishan would be competing with Sanju Samson in their quest to get the opening slot and their main wicketkeeping position.
On the same note, Rinku Singh, who was left off the recent series in South Africa controversially, has been brought back to compensate for the lower-middle order. The fact that he is included indicates that India wants to have a specialist finisher who is able to clear ropes any time he sees the need to cut the death overs.
New Leadership and Bowling Firepower
The fact that he was promoted to the position of vice-captain by Axar Patel helps to prove that he is an indispensable three-dimensional player. Agarkar termed him the X-factor who brings the equilibrium with his better batting and authoritative left-arm spin.
The bowling attack continues to be led by the best in the world, Jasprit Bumrah, with the assistance of the left-arm Arshdeep Singh and the newcomer Harshit Rana. The spin unit appears deadly in domestic conditions, with the so-called “Kul-Cha” sugar rush back with Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Washington Sundar.
India’s Official 15-Member Squad:
- Captain: Suryakumar Yadav
- Vice-Captain: Axar Patel
- Wicketkeepers: Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan.
- Batters: Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh.
- All-rounders: Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar.

Road Ahead
This same 15-member unit will also represent India in the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand starting January 21, 2026. As the World Cup is about to start on 7th February, the pressure is now on this new-look “Team India” to prove that their audacious decisions have been correct in the case of the defending champions.
