Harmanpreet Kaur Becomes Most Successful Captain in Women’s T20I History After India’s 3–0 Sweep vs Sri Lanka

Harmanpreet Kaur Becomes Most Successful Captain in T20Is

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM – Friday, December 26, 2025, was an Indian captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, and she formally became the most successful leader in Women T20 International matches history (T20Is). The eight-wicket win of India over Sri Lanka was not only what sealed the five-match series 3-0, but it also brought Harmanpreet beyond a legendary record in Australia.

Surpassing Meg Lanning

This win made Harmanpreet the 77th most wins as captain in the shortest format and overtook the legendary former Australian skipper Meg Lanning, who retired with 76 wins. Although Lanning reached her feat in 100 matches, the mark of 130 matches played by the captain of the Indian team indicates how long-lasting and successful Harmanpreet is in her career, and the sustained rise of Indian women’s cricket under her tenure.

Under Kaur’s leadership, India has established itself as a global powerhouse, which has taken it to a high with their latest historic ODI World Cup in November 2024.

Renuka and Deepti Shred the Top Order

Choosing to bowl first on a surface that offered early movement, India’s bowling attack was indefatigable. Having had a brief absence in the line, Renuka Singh Thakur returned to the line and reminded the world of her power-play capabilities. She tore the Sri Lankan top order apart, and she ended with some gorgeous figures of 4/21.

She was well supported by star all-rounder Deepti Sharma, who carried on with her dream run with a 3/18 spell. The batters of Sri Lanka were reduced to choking on the disciplined lines, and only Imesha Dulani (27) and Hasini Perera (25) were able to put any serious threat against them. The visitors were at length curbed to a meager 112/7 in their 20 overs.

The Shafali Verma Show

Shafali Verma was nothing but pure aggression on the chase. The young opener then came on the Shri Lankan bowlers in an ugly attack, after a comparatively quiet introduction in the same manner. Verma broke an unbroken 79 off only 42 balls, including 11 boundaries and three huge sixes.

Whereas India was losing Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues early to Kavisha Dilhari, the outcome was never in doubt as Verma went on a rampage on his second consecutive fifty. Appropriately, Harmanpreet Kaur (21*) was the same one who entered into a 48-run partnership with Verma to bring the team home. Harmanpreet survived to hit the winning runs in only 13.2 overs to score the series as well as her own world record.

A Historic Double for Deepti Sharma

Another monumental career achievement of Deepti Sharma was made that evening:

  • 150 Club: She was the first male or female Indian cricketer to take 150 T20I wickets.
  • Global First: Deepti becomes the first in the history of the game to have 1,000 runs and 150 wickets in the T20Is.
  • Joint World Record: Her 151st stump gave her a position jointly with Megan Schutt of Australia as the highest wicket-taker in Women’s T20I history.

Looking Ahead

The fact that Thiruvananthapuram is dominated by India depicts a team that is in its prime. The “Women in Blue” will seek to experiment in the remaining two games to be played on December 28 and 30 since the series has already secured.

As the T20 World Cup 2026 in the United Kingdom approaches, the history-making captainship of Harmanpreet gives India the leeway and the confidence to go in search of their inaugural T20 World Cup title.
